ETIAS Germany for US Citizens

The ETIAS Germany for US Citizens is an electronic travel authorization designed for Europe, standing for the European Travel Information and Authorization System.

Expected to be implemented in 2025, the ETIAS will enable eligible US citizens to travel to Germany and all Schengen Area member countries for short stays.

The European Commission is introducing the ETIAS for Germany to enhance border security and proactively identify potential risks or threats associated with visitors traveling to Schengen Area countries.

The ETIAS European Visa Waiver for Germany will be a multiple-entry travel authorization, allowing a maximum stay of 90 days in Germany and other Schengen countries per entry. Its validity extends for a total of 3 years from the date of approval.

How will ETIAS for Germany work?

The ETIAS for Germany is designed to ensure that visa-free travelers comply with the EU's safety and security standards.

Before your trip to Germany, you'll be required to fill out a brief ETIAS application form, providing essential personal details and passport information.

The ETIAS screening process for Germany involves the following steps:

  1. Complete the ETIAS Application form.
  2. Automatic cross-check against security databases (SIS, VIS, EURODAC, etc.).
  3. Application result:

  • 97% with no hits during auto-processing; ETIAS approved. or
  • 3% undergo manual processing by the Germany ETIAS National Unit.

Once approved, your ETIAS for Germany will be electronically linked to your passport. This linkage will be verified when you scan your passport at the airport in Germany or any other external Schengen border.

Will I have to apply for a new ETIAS every time I visit Germany?

Your ETIAS travel authorization remains valid for a duration of three years or until the expiration of your passport, depending on which comes first.

How much does the ETIAS Germany cost?

To apply for an ETIAS, a fee of EUR 7 is required. However, exemptions are applicable for applicants under 18, those over 70, and individuals who are family members of either EU citizens or non-EU citizens with the right of free movement in the EU.
