Old capital of Indonesia

Yogyakarta, situated in the south-central part of Java, serves as the old capital and capital city of the Special Region of Yogyakarta in Indonesia. This city holds unique significance as the only Indonesian royal city still under monarchical rule. Recognized as a cultural hub, Yogyakarta is renowned for preserving and promoting classical Javanese fine arts, encompassing ballet, batik textiles, drama, literature, music, poetry, silversmithing, visual arts, and wayang puppetry.

Beyond its cultural richness, Yogyakarta is a prominent center for education, hosting a substantial student population and numerous schools and universities. Notably, Gadjah Mada University, the largest and prestigious higher education institution in Indonesia, calls Yogyakarta home.

Historically, Yogyakarta served as the capital of the Yogyakarta Sultanate and played a pivotal role as the national capital from 1946 to 1948 during the Indonesian National Revolution, with Gedung Agung serving as the president's office. Additionally, Kotagede, a district in southeastern Yogyakarta, held the capital status of the Mataram Sultanate between 1587 and 1613.
