ETIAS

Why is ETIAS happening?

Let us go more deep into the reasons of why ETIAS appeared.

How ETIAS Works?

ETIAS is like a smart computer system that has two jobs: one is to find if people who can visit the Schengen States without a visa might be a safety risk, or if they might enter the country illegally, or if they might carry diseases. The other job is to make it easy for most travelers who don't pose any of these risks to cross the borders.

If you're not from the European Union and you don't need a visa to visit the Schengen area, you have to ask for permission through ETIAS before your trip. ETIAS gathers information to make sure it respects your rights and keeps your data safe while checking if there are any potential security issues, illegal entry risks, or health concerns.

When you fill out an online form, the system looks at EU databases related to borders and security. Most of the time, it will give you permission to travel in just a few minutes. But in some cases, if more checks are needed, it might take up to 30 days. You need this ETIAS travel permission to enter the Schengen States. Border guards will check it along with your travel documents when you cross into the EU. This quick check for non-EU citizens without a visa will make border crossings smoother, avoid delays, and make sure everyone is treated fairly.

ETIAS helps authorities get important information about people traveling to the EU. If there are concerns, they might say no to your travel permission. It will also help Schengen States manage their borders better and improve security inside. Travelers will know early on if they can visit the Schengen area legally, making crossing borders easier.

The European Agency that handles big IT systems for freedom, security, and justice (eu-LISA) is creating this system. ETIAS will start working around mid-2025, and there are plans in place to make sure it rolls out smoothly.

The idea of ETIAS appeared in 2016

ETIAS is a new security project that helps keep countries safe. It aims to manage borders better and stop international crimes and terrorism.

The idea for ETIAS started with the European Commission in April 2016. They suggested it in a report called "Stronger and Smarter Information Systems for Borders and Security." They officially introduced the plan on November 16, 2016. After talks with the European Parliament and the Council, the rules for ETIAS were set on September 12, 2018, and they started to be used on October 9, 2018.

Need to stay in EU longer?

Having the travel authorization only allows you to enter and remain on the territory of the European countries requiring ETIAS for a short-term stay.

Also, it does not give you the right to study long-term or to work in these countries. If you plan to stay in a European country requiring ETIAS for a longer period, you will most likely need a long-term visa.

Travellers with a valid visa do not need an ETIAS travel authorisation.
