Travel document requirements

To apply for an ETIAS travel authorization, you will need a valid travel document where a visa could be attached. This document should be valid for at least three months beyond your planned stay and should not be more than 10 years old. If your document does not meet these criteria, you should refer to the provided resources for how this affects your travel.

Travel documents that do not meet international standards may not be accepted during the application process and could cause issues when boarding transportation if they're not in compliance with the carrier's regulations. To ensure that your travel document is adequate for crossing into ETIAS-required European countries, you should consult the European Council’s website and the lists made available by the European Commission.

It's advisable not to travel on documents nearing expiration. While you can apply for ETIAS with a document that has less than three months of validity left, you may be denied entry unless there are exceptional circumstances, like humanitarian reasons.

This specific requirement is not necessary for family members of EU citizens or non-EU nationals who have the freedom to move within the European Union.

Certain travel documents have specific criteria

Certain travel documents have specific criteria to be eligible for ETIAS authorization due to the varied recognition of issuing authorities by European countries requiring ETIAS. Below are the requirements for holders of travel documents from specific countries and regions:

  • Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Montenegro: Holders of biometric passports can apply for ETIAS authorization. Holders of other passport types need a visa.
  • Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine: Holders of biometric passports that meet the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards can apply for ETIAS authorization. Holders of other passport types need a visa.
  • Serbia: Holders of biometric passports can apply for ETIAS authorization. Holders of other passport types or passports issued by the Serbian Coordination Directorate require a visa.
  • Hong Kong S.A.R.: Holders of 'Hong Kong Special Administrative Region' passports can apply for ETIAS authorization. Holders of other passport types need a visa.
  • Macao S.A.R.: Holders of 'Região Administrativa Especial de Macau' passports can apply for ETIAS authorization. Holders of other passport types need a visa.
  • Taiwan: Holders of passports with an included identity card number can apply for ETIAS authorization. Holders of other passport types need a visa.

Travelers must ensure their documents meet the necessary standards for ETIAS application, and if not, they should prepare to apply for a visa instead.

Which data will be taken during ETIAS application form?

When applying for ETIAS, you will be asked to fill in specific details:

  • Personal Information: This includes your full name, date and place of birth, current nationality, your home address, the first names of your parents, as well as your email address and phone number.
  • Travel Document Details: Information pertaining to the travel document you will use for your trip.
  • Education and Occupation: Your level of education and details about your current job.
  • Travel Plans: Information about your planned travel and stay in the countries that require an ETIAS.
  • Background Questions: Questions about any criminal record, past visits to war zones or conflict areas, and if you've been asked to leave any country recently.

You must declare that all the information and statements you provide are true and that you understand the entry requirements for the territories of the countries that need an ETIAS. You might also have to show supporting documents each time you cross the border.

If someone else is applying for you, they need to give their own full name, details of their organization (if relevant), their relationship to you, and confirm that both of you have agreed to the declaration of representation.

For applicants under 18 years old, the ETIAS application must be completed and submitted by an individual who has permanent or temporary parental responsibility or legal guardianship over the minor.
