Sunni Islam holds a predominant position in the religious landscape, embraced by 99% of the population. Orthodox Christianity constitutes a minority at 0.5%, with the remaining portion of the population adhering to various Christian denominations and other religions.

The Church of Cyprus, a prominent autocephalous Greek Orthodox institution, plays a central role. Established in 431 A.D., it gained independence from the Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East, with its archbishop holding a pivotal position.
